Tower Restoration and Repairs Update

Recent inspections have identified a number of significant structural issues within the tower. Some are the result of natural weathering over the building's 160-year history, others stem from previous repairs that have not stood the test of time, while some relate to shortcomings in the original Victorian construction. These investigations have confirmed that a programme of urgent conservation works is required.

We would like to update the community on the essential conservation works that are being undertaken to ensure the church can continue to serve the people of Llandudno safely for many years to come.

Key Areas of Work

The decorative pinnacles at the top of the tower were found to be structurally unstable and have already been carefully dismantled for safety. They are now being reconstructed using appropriate conservation methods, traditional materials and stainless-steel reinforcement to ensure their long-term stability.

The project also includes repairs to damaged stonework, restoration of the tower guttering, relining of the rainwater system, extensive repairs to the tower buttresses and improvements to drainage. Temporary bracing may also be installed to the spire while longer-term conservation works are planned.

These works are essential not only to preserve this important Grade II listed building, but also to ensure it remains a safe, welcoming and inspiring place for worship, community activities, concerts and visitors.

Estimated Costs

Due to the complexity and specialist nature of the conservation works, the tower restoration project has been divided into three phases to enable the repairs to be delivered in a structured and manageable way.

• Phase A – Surveys, Specifications and Professional Services: £78,000
• Phase B – Tower Repairs: £300,000. This phase includes the reconstruction of the pinnacles, structural repairs to the  buttresses, rainwater goods, and associated conservation works.
• Phase C – Additional Urgent Repairs: £43,000. This phase includes further urgent repairs to the spire and other defects identified during the investigation works including the North East roof.

The total estimated cost of the tower restoration project is approximately £421,000. As is often the case with historic buildings, further defects may be uncovered as work progresses, and costs may increase accordingly.

The church is actively seeking funding from a range of grant providers, charitable trusts and supporters to help complete these essential repairs and secure the long-term future of this important community landmark.
