Welcome to St John's Methodist Church, Llandudno

For more than 160 years, St John's Methodist Church has stood at the heart of Llandudno, offering a place of worship, fellowship, and Christian witness to local residents and visitors alike. As the original church of English Methodism in the area, our story is deeply woven into the history of both the town and the wider Methodist movement in North Wales.

Our beginnings were humble but visionary. In the late 1850s, when Llandudno was a small seaside community of just 2,500 residents, a group of dedicated Methodists recognised the need for a permanent Methodist presence in the growing resort. Through the pioneering work of Revd E. Crump, the faithful ministry of Captain Vivian, and the commitment of just thirty-four founding members, English Methodism took root in the town.

A temporary chapel was opened in Lloyd Street in August 1861, providing a place for worship and fellowship. The dream of a permanent church soon followed, and with support from the renowned Methodist preacher Dr W. Morley Punshon and the Methodist "Watering Places Fund", St John's Church was opened in 1866. The faith, generosity, and determination of those early members laid foundations that continue to support our ministry today.

Over the decades, the church has adapted and grown, responding to the changing needs of the community while remaining faithful to its Christian calling. Through periods of challenge and renewal, generations of worshippers have invested their time, talents, and resources to ensure that St John's remains a vibrant centre of worship and service.

Today, St John's continues to welcome people from every walk of life. We are blessed by long-standing members, those who have chosen North Wales as their retirement home, families, young people, and newcomers discovering faith for the first time. Our church life is enriched through worship, Bible study, fellowship groups, community activities, and outreach ministries that seek to share God's love in practical and meaningful ways.

Situated in one of Britain's most popular seaside destinations, we also have the privilege of welcoming thousands of visitors each year. Many join us for worship during their holidays, making St John's a church whose influence extends far beyond the local community.

While we are proud of our history, our focus is firmly on the future. We seek to be a welcoming, Christ-centred church where faith is nurtured, lives are transformed, and all are encouraged to discover God's purpose for their lives. Through relevant preaching, meaningful worship, and compassionate service, we continue the mission begun by our founders more than a century and a half ago.

Whether you are a local resident, a regular visitor to Llandudno, or simply exploring faith for the first time, you will find a warm welcome at St John's. We invite you to join us as we continue to serve Christ at the heart of our town and community.
